Justice A.K. Chawla was born on October 20, 1958, in Ambala, Haryana. He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya in 1975 and graduated in Science in 1978. He obtained his LL.B. in 1982 from Kurukshetra University.

Enrolled as an Advocate on July 15, 1982, Justice Chawla practiced in the Delhi High Court and Delhi District Courts, handling civil, company, and labor cases. He was appointed Additional District & Sessions Judge on April 21, 1997, presiding over various civil and criminal courts. In June 2003, he became the Legal Advisor of the New Delhi Municipal Council. Returning in January 2005, he presided over the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal.

Justice Chawla is a trained Mediator under the Supreme Court of India and served as Judge In-charge of the Delhi Mediation Centre, Karkardooma Courts. He served as District Judge-II-cum-ASJ I/c (North), Tis Hazari Courts, from February 6, 2010, and then as District Judge-III-cum-ASJ I/c (West), Tis Hazari Courts, from March 11, 2011.
