Born on March 16, 1956, in Shillong, Meghalaya, Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed has had an illustrious career in law and academics. He studied at St Edmund's College, Shillong, and St Columba's High School, New Delhi. Excelling academically, he was selected for the National Science Talent Scholarship in 1972 but pursued Economics (Hons) at St Stephen's College, Delhi University, graduating in 1975. He continued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge University, U.K., obtaining B.A.(Hons) and M.A. Degrees in Economics.
Before fully committing to law, he lectured in Economics at St Stephen's College (1977-1979) while simultaneously pursuing his LLB degree from Delhi University, which he received in 1980. Enrolling as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi on September 5, 1980, he began his practice in the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court. Initially working with Shri Siddhartha Shanker Ray, Bar-at-Law (Senior Advocate), he later practiced independently, establishing “Lawyers Associated” in 1986. He advised on law related to finance, companies, properties, banking, contracts, and other commercial and civil areas, and he also wrote on Muslim Personal Law. He contributed the section on “Deeds and other instruments” for Halsbury's Law of India and has a keen interest in computers, having written accounting software for lawyers: ACT-C and ACT-S. Till his elevation as an additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on December 20th, 2002, he was also the Secretary of Ghalib Institute, New Delhi.
He served as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court twice (June-September 2013 and February-April 2014) before being elevated as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court on April 1, 2017. Justice Ahmed is also a sportsman, having played Cricket and Football for his school, and Tennis and Squash for Trinity College, Cambridge.
