A distinguished figure in the Delhi High Court, Justice Deepa Sharma's career is marked by a deep commitment to justice and innovation in legal practices. Born on May 28th, 1956, she embarked on her legal journey after graduating from the Faculty of Law, Delhi University, in 1978, following a Bachelor of Science degree.
Justice Sharma's dedication led her to qualify for the Delhi Judicial Service (DJS) examination, and she joined the Delhi Judiciary as a Civil Judge in September 1980. Over her extensive tenure in both the Delhi Judicial and Higher Judicial Service, she distinguished herself through numerous accomplishments.
A significant achievement was her pioneering role in establishing Family Courts across Delhi's districts. As the First Principal Judge of these courts, she was instrumental in fostering an empathic environment and streamlined processes, which have become a hallmark of these institutions.
Justice Sharma has been a strong advocate for incorporating new and alternative legal practices such as mediation. A certified practitioner and trainer in mediation, she established the Mediation Centre at District Courts, Dwarka. She has also traveled extensively to train lawyers and judges across the country in mediation as an alternative method of dispute resolution.
Before her elevation to the Delhi High Court, she served as the District & Sessions Judge, heading the Dwarka Courts. Her diverse experience encompasses various positions, including Judge MACT, NDPS, Judge CBI, Sessions Judge for cases under the ITP Act, Judge Labor Court, ACMM, Senior Civil Judge, RCT, and others.
Academically inclined, Justice Sharma has lectured on various aspects of law at the Delhi Judicial Academy and National Law University. Her interests extend to poetry, music, and gardening. She was elevated to the bench of the High Court of Delhi as an Additional Judge on April 17th, 2013, and retired on May 27th, 2018.
