Early Life and Education

Born on March 13, 1960, Justice Patel demonstrated academic excellence from an early age. He passed S.S.C. with 68% in 1975 and earned a B.Sc. with 68% from M.G. Science College, Ahmedabad, in 1979, followed by an M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from the University School of Science in 1981. He completed his LL.B. in 1984 with first class and LL.M. with First Rank in the first class in 1986 from L.A. Shah Law College, Ahmedabad, receiving two Gold Medals.

Legal Career

Enrolling as an Advocate on July 28, 1984, he practiced at the High Court of Gujarat, handling Civil, Criminal, and Constitutional matters, as well as Excise and Custom matters on behalf of the Union of India. He served as a Special Counsel for the State of Gujarat in other High Courts and was a panel advocate for various institutions, including Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). He also lectured part-time at Sir L.A. Shah Law College for nine years.

Judicial Appointments and Administrative Roles

Justice Patel was appointed as an Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in 1999 and as Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in 2001. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Gujarat on March 7, 2004, and became a permanent Judge on January 25, 2006. On transfer, he took oath as Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi, on February 3, 2009. He served as Executive Chairman of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority from August 2012. He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand multiple times before becoming the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on June 7, 2019. He retired on March 12, 2022.
