Born on April 7, 1921, Justice Dinshah Pirosha Madon's legal career was marked by versatility and distinguished service. He was educated at Imperial High School, Bombay, Sardar Dastur Noshirwan High School, Poona, Elphinstone College, Bombay, and Government Law College, Bombay.
Justice Madon enrolled as an Advocate (A.S.) on November 21, 1944, and as an Advocate (O.S.) on November 2, 1945, of the High Court at Bombay. He was admitted as an Advocate of the Supreme Court on May 31, 1952. His practice focused on the original side of the Bombay High Court, but he also appeared in the appellate side, other courts in India, and foreign courts, including the Court of Appeals for East Africa at Nairobi and the Supreme Court of Aden. He handled civil, constitutional, taxation, and criminal matters.
Justice Madon served as a part-time Professor of Law at Government Law College, Bombay, from 1952 to 1955. He was appointed Additional Judge of the High Court at Bombay on September 25, 1967, and became a permanent Judge on August 6, 1969. He acted as a one-man Commission of Enquiry into communal disturbances in Maharashtra in May 1970. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on August 11, 1982, and subsequently as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on March 15, 1983, retiring on April 7, 1986.
