Early Life and Education
Born on December 12, 1924, in Ujjain, Justice Oza was the son of Shri Jamnalalji Oza, a well-known social worker. He received his early education at Madhav College, Ujjain, and was actively involved in student politics and the Quit India movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. He also led agitations for the merger of the Holkar State into the Indian Union.
Legal Career
Justice Oza joined the Bar at Indore in 1948 and quickly became involved in national politics, attending the Asian Socialist Conference in Rangoon (Burma) in 1952. He gained recognition as a lawyer of outstanding merit, handling Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Labour, and other significant cases in Indore for about a decade before his elevation to the Bench.
Judicial Service
On July 29, 1968, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the M.P. High Court at Jabalpur, later serving at the Indore Bench. As a Judge, he pioneered legal aid initiatives, founding a voluntary legal aid and education society. He became the Chief Justice of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on January 3, 1984, serving as Acting Chief Justice until December 1, 1984, when he was appointed permanent Chief Justice. On October 29, 1985, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
