Justice Inder Singh Mehta was born on April 6, 1958, in Village Lippa, Tehsil Moorang, District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, into a Himalayan Buddhist family. He completed his All India Higher Secondary Examination (CBSE) from Vishesh Kendriya Vidalaya, Janakpuri, Delhi, in 1976.
He believes in a disciplined life and was an active member of the NCC, earning a Certificate ‘C’ on July 5, 1979. He graduated from Hans Raj College in 1979 and was awarded the Hans Raj College Colour.
He pursued LL.B. at Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, graduating in 1982.
Justice Mehta enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1982 and began his practice in Himachal Pradesh. He was selected for the Delhi Higher Judicial Services in 1995 and served in various District Courts of Delhi. In 2008, he was appointed as the first District Judge of the South-West District Court, Dwarka, Delhi.
He was later appointed as the first District & Sessions Judge of New Delhi District at Patiala House Courts, where he handled various NIA cases. In 2014, he participated in a seminar organized by the Global Counter Terrorism Forum in The Hague, Netherlands, focusing on the Role of the Judiciary in Handling Counter Terrorism and Other National Security Cases.
Justice Mehta was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on December 15, 2014, and became a Permanent Judge on June 2, 2016. He retired on April 5, 2020.
