Justice K. Jagannatha Shetty
A luminary in the Indian judiciary, Justice Kalmanje Jagannatha Shetty, born on December 15, 1926, in Ambalapady, Udupi Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District, had a remarkable legal career. He graduated from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, in 1951 and studied law at Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Enrolling as Vakil on July 14, 1954, and as Advocate on August 16, 1955, in the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad, he practiced there until 1956 and earned a Master’s Degree in Law. Upon the reorganization of States in November 1956, he moved his practice to the Karnataka High Court at Bangalore. He gained extensive experience in civil, service, and constitutional matters.
Justice Shetty was a part-time Professor of Law at Government Law College, Bangalore, for about 10 years, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He also served two terms as a member of the Mysore State Bar Council.
Appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on June 25, 1970, he served as Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court from October 24, 1985, to August 27, 1986. On October 1, 1986, he was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Allahabad. His career culminated with his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 1, 1987. He retired on December 14, 1991.
