A distinguished jurist in the Indian legal system, Justice P. Jaganmohan Reddy's career reflects a commitment to justice and legal scholarship. Born on January 23, 1910, he pursued his education in Hyderabad, Leeds, and Cambridge, culminating in a Barrister-at-Law from Gray’s Inn.
Justice Reddy's legal practice spanned across the High Courts of Bombay, Madras, and Hyderabad from 1937 to 1946. He also served as a Legal Advisor to several government undertakings. His early career included roles as an Expert Member in the Legislative Assembly for Income-tax and Company Law and as Deputy Law Secretary and Chief Draftsman for the Government of Hyderabad.
His judicial appointments began with an Additional Judge role at the Hyderabad High Court in 1948, followed by a term as District and Sessions Judge. He then served as a Puisne Judge at the High Court of Hyderabad and later at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Justice Reddy was appointed Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on July 19, 1966, before ascending to the Supreme Court of India on August 1, 1969. He also chaired a Commission of Inquiry into communal disturbances in Ahmedabad.
Beyond the courtroom, Justice Reddy contributed to academia as a Member of the Syndicate and Dean of the Faculty at Osmania University and as an Officiating Vice Chancellor. He also authored publications, including 'The Hyderabad Excess Profits Tax Act' and 'Quest of Justice'.
