A trailblazer in the Indian judiciary, Justice Sunita Agarwal was appointed as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court on July 23, 2023, marking a significant milestone in her illustrious career. Born on April 30, 1966, she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to justice and legal excellence.
Justice Agarwal completed her B.Sc. from Lucknow University in 1986 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from Awadh University in 1990. She enrolled as an Advocate with the U.P. Bar Association on December 16, 1990, and practiced extensively in Civil, Writ, Original, and Commercial Jurisdictions at the Allahabad High Court.
After 21 years of dedicated practice, Justice Agarwal was elevated as Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011, and took oath as a Permanent Judge on August 6, 2013. She is a trained and certified Mediator and was part of the first batch of Allahabad High Court trained in Mediation and Conciliation.
In April 2023, she was appointed as the Executive Chairperson of the State Legal Services Authority, Uttar Pradesh, being the senior-most judge of the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Agarwal has presided over Single and Division Benches in various jurisdictions, including Civil and Criminal Appeals, Service, Land Acquisition, Intra-Court Appeal, and Constitutional matters. She was also part of the Seven Judges Bench of Allahabad High Court addressing issues related to Subordinate Courts and infrastructure.
As a Judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Sunita Agarwal was a member of numerous administrative committees since 2016, including the Internal Complaints Committee and the Committee for matters relating to ‘Sensitization of Family Court Matters.’ She chaired the Internal Committees, Family Courts Committee, and other committees related to rules, criminal case disposal, Law Clerk engagement, appointment of Special Judicial Magistrates, Jail Reforms, and more.
After serving in Allahabad High Court for 12 years, Justice Agarwal assumed office as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court on July 23, 2023, continuing her legacy of dedicated service and leadership in the judiciary. She is expected to retire on April 29, 2028.
