Sunita Gupta was born on December 14th, 1954, in Kolkata, West Bengal. She completed Higher Secondary education from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in First Division in 1970. She then pursued a B.A (Hons.) in Philosophy from Miranda House, University of Delhi, in 1973, followed by a Post Graduation in Philosophy from the University of Delhi in 1975.
She obtained an LL.B from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1978, securing the first position and was awarded the Hiralal Daga Memorial Gold Medal, the University Law Union Prize, and a Certificate of Merit. In 2002, she completed an LL.M from Kurukshetra University.
Justice Gupta enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1978 and practiced at District Courts of Delhi before joining the Delhi Judicial Service in 1980. She served as Metropolitan Magistrate, Civil Judge, Additional Rent Controller, Mahila Court, and ACMM before being promoted to Delhi Higher Judicial Service in November 1996.
She presided as Additional District Judge, Addl. Sessions Judge, Matrimonial Court, Special Judge (NDPS), and Appellate Tribunal MCD before being appointed as District Judge–cum-Additional Sessions Judge In-Charge, North-East District, Karkardooma Court in 2008. On October 17th, 2011, she was appointed as District & Sessions Judge/ Rent Control Tribunal, Delhi. Justice Gupta also trained and worked as a Mediator.
She was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Delhi on April 17th, 2013, and as a Permanent Judge on March 18th, 2015. Justice Sunita Gupta retired on December 13th, 2016.
