Justice Tashi Rabstan, a distinguished figure in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, has a career marked by dedication, legal expertise, and a deep understanding of the law. His journey from an advocate to the Chief Justice exemplifies his commitment to the judiciary and the principles of justice.
Born on April 10th, 1963, in Village Skurbuchan, District Leh Ladakh, Justice Rabstan hails from an agriculturist family. He completed his Graduation and LL.B from the University of Jammu, setting the stage for his legal career.
Justice Rabstan was enrolled as an Advocate on March 6th, 1990, with the Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir. He began his practice in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and various other High Courts, focusing on Arbitrations, Constitution, Service, Election, Civil, and Criminal matters. His experience includes researching the intent of laws and judicial decisions and applying the law to clients’ circumstances.
From 1997 to 2005, Justice Rabstan served as Standing Counsel for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh. In September 1998, he was appointed as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel (now Central Government Counsel) for the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Jammu Wing, a position he held until his elevation. Additionally, he served as panel counsel for the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, from April 2008 to December 31st, 2011.
Justice Rabstan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on March 7th, 2013, and took the oath of office on March 8th, 2013. He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on May 16th, 2014. His career continued to ascend as he was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on December 6th, 2022, and again on July 16th, 2024.
Culminating his distinguished career, Justice Rabstan was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on September 21st, 2024, and took the oath of office on September 27th, 2024. This appointment reflects his extensive experience, legal knowledge, and unwavering commitment to the judiciary.
