A distinguished jurist with a wide-ranging career, Hon’ble Shri Justice Uma Nath Singh, born on 15th January, 1954, has served in multiple High Courts across India. He completed his graduation from Ewing Christian College, Allahabad, and furthered his education with post-graduation in Political Science and a law degree from the University of Allahabad. Enrolling as an advocate with the Bar Council, Delhi, on 23rd April, 1982, he became an Advocate on Record of the Supreme Court of India in March 1987.
Justice Singh practiced in the Supreme Court of India for over 19 years, handling diverse cases, including the Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster case. He also served as the advocate on record and standing counsel for the State of Madhya Pradesh from October 1988 until his elevation to the Bench. His career as a judge began with his appointment as an Additional Judge in the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 22nd October, 2001, becoming a permanent Judge in April 2002.
His judicial journey continued with transfers to the Punjab & Haryana High Court, where he took oath on 2nd December, 2004, and subsequently to the Allahabad High Court, assuming office on 30th June, 2009. During his tenure, he also served as the Executive Chairman of the U. P. State Legal Services Authority. Transferred to the High Court of Meghalaya, he took oath on 27th August, 2014, and was appointed as Chief Justice (Acting) on the same day, later becoming the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya on 19th March, 2015. He demitted the Office on 14th January 2016.
