A distinguished jurist known for his expertise in constitutional, service, and labor law, Justice Aftab Alam served with distinction in the Patna High Court, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, and the Supreme Court of India. His keen interest in Urdu and Persian poetry, as well as Sufism, adds a unique dimension to his persona.
Born in Patna on April 19, 1948, Justice Alam completed his schooling and college education in the same city. His early education laid the groundwork for his future legal pursuits.
Justice Alam enrolled as an Advocate on March 27, 1973, and practiced primarily in the Patna High Court, focusing on Labour, Service, and Constitutional Law cases. From September 7, 1981, to September 6, 1985, he served as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in the Patna High Court. Recognizing his legal acumen, the Patna High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate at a relatively young age on February 1, 1984.
Justice Alam was appointed as a Judge of the Patna High Court on July 27, 1990. He was later transferred to the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, where he served as the Acting Chief Justice starting on June 6, 2007. His career reached its zenith with his elevation to the Supreme Court, where he assumed office on November 12, 2007. Justice Aftab Alam retired on April 18, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of legal expertise and judicial integrity.
