Early Life and Education

Born on February 3, 1947, Justice Ganguly completed his M.A. in English in 1968 and his LLB in 1970, both from Calcutta University. His academic background provided a strong foundation for his legal career.

Early Career

In 1969, Justice Ganguly began his professional life as a teacher in a school where he had once been a student. He started practicing law in the Calcutta High Court in 1972.

Judicial Appointments

Justice Ganguly was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on January 10, 1994. Shortly after, he was transferred to the Patna High Court, joining on April 4, 1994, where he served for over six years. He was then transferred back to the Calcutta High Court on August 1, 2000, where he eventually became the senior-most puisne Judge from March 2005. He served as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court twice.Transferred to Orissa High Court and joined Orissa High Court as the senior most puisne Judge on 21st April, 2006. Became Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 28.1.2007 and then took Oath as Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 02.03.2007. Then became Chief Justice of Madras High Court on 19.05.2008. His career culminated with his appointment to the Supreme Court of India as a Judge on December 17, 2008. Justice A.K. Ganguly retired on February 3, 2012.
