Born on September 2nd, 1959, in Delhi, Justice Kohli's academic journey began at St. Thomas School, New Delhi, followed by graduation in History (Hons.) from St. Stephens' College, University of Delhi. She further pursued a Post Graduation in History and then completed her L.L.B. course at the Law Faculty, Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi. Enrolling as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1984 marked the commencement of her legal career.
Justice Kohli served as the Standing Counsel and Legal Advisor of the New Delhi Municipal Council from 1999 to 2004. She was appointed as the Additional Standing Counsel (Civil), Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, in December 2004, representing the government in significant public interest litigations. Her advisory roles extended to the Public Grievances Commission, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and various organizations.
Elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Delhi on May 29, 2006, she took oath as a permanent Judge on August 29, 2007. Justice Kohli's contributions include serving on the General Council of the West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences and the Editorial Committee of ‘Nyaya Deep’. As Chairperson of the Committee of the Delhi Judicial Academy, she played a crucial role in judicial training and development.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Justice Kohli chaired a High Powered Committee for decongestion of jails and served as the Executive Chairperson of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority. She also held positions in the Delhi High Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Society and the Governing Council of the National Law University.
Beyond her judicial duties, Justice Kohli is passionate about promoting mediation, environmental preservation, and the role of Family Courts. She was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana on January 7, 2021.
