Born on October 6, 1946, Justice J.M. Panchal demonstrated academic excellence early in his life. He earned a B.Com. from H.L. College of Commerce, Ahmedabad, before passing the LL.B. Examination in 1972. His outstanding performance earned him Gold Medals and several other prizes. Following his LL.B., he was appointed as a Fellow in Sir L.A. Shah Law College, Ahmedabad, marking the beginning of his association with legal education.
Justice Panchal enrolled as an Advocate in the High Court of Gujarat on July 4, 1972, and began his practice exclusively in the High Court. He was appointed as an Advocate representing cases of the Western Railway before the High Court of Gujarat. In 1976, he was appointed as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor. By 1990, he was In-charge Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor before his elevation to the Bench. His practice encompassed a wide range of cases, including Civil, Constitutional, Preventive Detention, and Criminal matters. His father had also served in the Judiciary, marking a family legacy in law.
Justice Panchal was elevated to the Bench of the Gujarat High Court as an Additional Judge on November 22, 1990, and confirmed as a Permanent Judge on October 28, 1994. He served as President of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy and the Gujarat High Court Advocate Law Library. He was also a Member of the General Council of Gujarat National Law University. On July 16, 2007, he was appointed as acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, and he took the oath of office on September 16, 2007. His career culminated with his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on November 12, 2007. Justice J.M. Panchal retired on October 5, 2011, leaving behind a distinguished record of judicial service.
