Early Life and Education

Born on March 1, 1926, in Simaluguri Bharalua Gaon, Assam, K.N. Saikia's early education took place at Nazira High School. He graduated with first-class honors in Commerce from J.B. College, Jorhat, in 1947 and secured the top position in his M.A. (Commerce) examination at Calcutta University in 1949. He also passed the LL.B. Examination of Gauhati University in 1954, again securing first class first position.

Academic and Legal Career

Saikia began his career as a Lecturer in Commerce (Evening Classes) at Gauhati University in 1950. He became an Advocate of the Gauhati High Court on April 18, 1955, and was admitted as an Associate Member of the Corporation of Certified Secretaries, London, in 1956. He advanced to Reader in Commerce (Evening Classes) in 1957 and later became a Professor of Commerce at Gauhati University in 1964. He also served as Professor of Law in Dibrugarh University (Evening classes) from 1966.

Judicial Service

Justice Saikia was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 12, 1979. He served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court from December 20, 1986, to March 1, 1988. On December 14, 1988, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, retiring on February 28, 1991.
