Justice Rakesh Thapliyal's journey to the bench is marked by a diverse legal career, culminating in his appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Uttarakhand. Born on November 15, 1965, in Tehri Garhwal, he comes from a family with strong roots in education and law. He completed his early education in Srinagar Garhwal and Allahabad before enrolling with the U.P. Bar Council on March 19, 1989.
Justice Thapliyal began his practice in the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad under the guidance of Shri Sushil Chandra Mamgain. In Allahabad, he served as Standing Counsel for various departments. Following the creation of Uttarakhand in 2000, he permanently shifted to Nainital in June 2001.
In Uttarakhand, Justice Thapliyal was Standing Counsel for numerous organizations and corporations, practicing in Constitutional, Service, and criminal matters. He was appointed as Central Government Standing Counsel in 2002-03 and as Additional Advocate General for the State of Uttarakhand in 2011. In 2014, he was appointed as Assistant Solicitor General of India, a position he held until his elevation as a Judge. He was designated as Senior Advocate in the High Court of Uttarakhand on July 19, 2019.
Justice Thapliyal was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Uttarakhand on April 27, 2023, and took oath on April 28, 2023, bringing a wealth of experience from his extensive legal career to the bench.
