Justice S. Mohan
Mr. Justice Shanmughasundaram Mohan, born on February 11, 1930, was a distinguished jurist who served with distinction in the Indian judiciary. He graduated from Presidency College, Madras, and earned a law degree from the University of Madras, where he was awarded the Lakshminarasa Reddy Gold Medal and the Sri Muthuswamy Iyer Scholarship. Justice Mohan also obtained a Master of Law degree in Constitution and International Law.
Enrolling as an Advocate in the High Court of Madras in August 1954, he quickly ascended through the ranks, holding positions such as Assistant Government Pleader in 1966, Special Government Pleader in 1967, and Government Pleader in 1969. In 1971, he served as the Advocate General of Madras.
His judicial career began in February 1974 as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court, becoming a permanent Judge on August 1, 1975. He also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court from December 13, 1988, before being appointed Chief Justice on October 19, 1989. Subsequently, he was sworn in as Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka on October 26, 1989, and served as Acting Governor of Karnataka from February 5, 1990, to May 8, 1990.
Elevated to the Supreme Court of India on October 7, 1991, Justice Mohan retired on February 10, 1995, leaving behind a legacy of legal expertise and dedicated public service.
