Justice S. Ranganathan

A distinguished figure in the Indian legal system, Justice Srinivasachar Ranganathan, born on October 31, 1927, had a long and impactful career. He enrolled as an Advocate on July 21, 1952, and began his ascent in the legal profession.
From October 1, 1954, he served as Junior Standing Counsel to the Commissioner of Income-Tax, Madras, eventually becoming Senior Standing Counsel until February 1964. He then transitioned to the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal, serving as a Judicial Member from February 24, 1964, and confirmed in this role from August 4, 1967. He rose to become Vice President of the Southern and Northern Zones of the Tribunal and later its President.

Justice Ranganathan was also involved in the revision of Sundaram’s Law of Income Tax (1953 Edition) and contributed substantially to the commentary on the Income-tax Act by Shri A.C. Sampathyengar.
