Justice Sanjay Prasad is a respected judge at the High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi, who comes from a family with a strong legal background spanning three generations. His journey from the bar to the bench reflects a deep commitment to the judicial system and public service.
Born on January 7, 1965, Justice Prasad continued his family's legal legacy. He completed his matriculation from Sawatantra Bharat High School, Bhaga Dhanbad, in 1979, earned a B.Sc. from Magadh University in 1985, and an LL.B, also from Magadh University of Bihar, in 1989.
Choosing the legal profession, Justice Prasad joined the Bar of the High Court of Judicature at Patna on August 21, 1990. He was a member of the Ranchi Bar from 1999 to 2001, and after the bifurcation of the court, he shifted his practice to the High Court of Jharkhand.
In 2001, he joined the Superior Judicial Service and was posted as Additional District & Sessions Judge in the District Court of Giridih on December 22, 2001. In April 2003, he became the Joint Registrar, Judicial, and in September 2003, he was given additional charge as Joint Registrar, List and Computer, at the High Court of Jharkhand, a role he held until February 2005.
In 2005, he was posted as AJC –cum- Special Judge CBI, handling high-profile cases of the Fodder Scam. By 2008, he was promoted to Principal District Judge and posted as Labour Judge Bokaro on July 16, 2008. From September 2009 to December 2010, he served as the Principal District & Sessions Judge in Giridih.
Justice Prasad returned to the High Court of Jharkhand on December 16, 2010, as Registrar Establishment and later became the Principal Judge of the Family Court Ranchi on April 1, 2011. From April 14, 2012, to January 2014, he served as the Principal District and Sessions Judge in Lohardaga, also holding the additional charge of Principal Judge, Family Court, Lohardaga.
In February 2014, he became the Chairman of the Commercial Tax Tribunal Ranchi. In August 2015, he joined as Principal District & Sessions Judge in Bokaro and held additional charge of the Family Court, Bokaro, for 5-6 months. On May 2, 2018, he was appointed as Principal Secretary cum L.R. Dept. Of Law. In May 2019, he was reappointed as Chairman of the Commercial Tax Tribunal Ranchi and on September 24, 2020, as Principal Secretary cum L.R. Dept. Of Law, from where he was elevated as Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand.
Justice Prasad took oath as Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand on October 8, 2021.
