Early Life and Education

Born on January 12, 1940, in Maladkai, Raichur District, Justice Patil's early life laid the foundation for his future legal endeavors.

Early Career

Justice Patil began his legal journey on July 25, 1962, joining the Bar at Gulbarga, a significant divisional headquarters in the Hyderabad-Karnataka area. His practice flourished until January 1979, encompassing both criminal and civil law.

Academic Contributions

From 1967 to 1975, Justice Patil shared his expertise as a Part-time Lecturer at Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College, Gulbarga. He later served as the Honorary Principal of the same college from May 1975 to June 1978.

Legal and Social Engagement

Justice Patil extended his services as a Legal Advisor to Shree Sharanabasaveswarar Samasthan, Hyderabad, and the Karnataka Education Society. He also authored a book on the life of Shree Sharanabasaveswara. His lectures on legal and social topics aired on All India Radio, further amplifying his influence.

High Court Practice

In February 1979, Justice Patil transitioned to Bangalore, focusing on practice in the High Court of Karnataka. He served as Standing Counsel for the Bangalore Development Authority and the Central Silk Board, and as Advocate for Bangalore University and Gulbarga University.

International Exposure

Justice Patil's legal perspective broadened through international conferences and visits. He attended the International Lawyers' Conference in Belgrade and Berlin in 1980 and traveled to the U.S.S.R. and European countries in 1987, the U.K. in 1995 and 1996, and the U.S.A. in 1996.

Judicial Elevation

On March 29, 1990, Justice Patil was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Karnataka at Bangalore. His career progressed with a transfer to the High Court at Madras in April 1994, where he served until December 27, 1998. He then served as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Madras from December 28, 1998, to January 19, 1999.

Chief Justice and Supreme Court

Justice Patil assumed office as Chief Justice of the High Court of Rajasthan on January 22, 1999. His career culminated with his elevation to Judge of the Supreme Court of India on March 15, 2000, where he served until his retirement on January 11, 2005.
