A luminary in the Indian legal system, Justice Syed Shah Mohammed Quadri's distinguished career is marked by profound contributions to constitutional, taxation, and civil law.
Early Life and Education
Born on April 5, 1938, Justice Quadri pursued his academic interests, earning a B.A. and LL.B. from Osmania University, Hyderabad. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of London, where he obtained another LL.B. He specialized in Taxation, Company Law, and Islamic Law. Justice Quadri was also called to the Bar at Law from Lincoln’s Inn.
Legal Practice and Teaching
Justice Quadri enrolled as an advocate on January 7, 1963, practicing in both trial courts and the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. From December 1972 to October 1981, he lectured at the College of Law, Osmania University.
Government Service and Legal Authority
From October 1981 to July 1986, Justice Quadri served as a Government Pleader in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at Kakatiya University, A.P., and was a Member of the Board of Governors, Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy. As Executive Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, he further contributed to legal services.
Judicial Career in Andhra Pradesh
Justice Quadri was appointed Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in July 1986. He served as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh from November 3, 1997, to December 3, 1997, delivering many judgments on constitutional, taxation, civil, and criminal law.
Supreme Court Appointment and Contributions
Appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on December 4, 1997, Justice Quadri became an Executive Member of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University (NALSAR), University of Law, Hyderabad. He was also a member of the collegium of the Supreme Court and held the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee on January 1, 2003.
Post-Retirement
After retiring from the Supreme Court on April 5, 2003, Justice Quadri was appointed as Chairman of the Authority for Advance Ruling (Income-Tax) and held the full additional charge of Chairperson for Authority for Advance Rulings (Customs & Central Excise) from February 4, 2004.
