A legal scholar and jurist of high repute, Dr. Justice B.S. Chauhan's career in the Indian judiciary is distinguished by his academic achievements and extensive experience across various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.
Born on July 2, 1949, Dr. Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, known as B.S. Chauhan, passed B.Sc. in 1970 from Meerut University in first division. He graduated in Law in 1974 from Banaras Hindu University in first division. Awarded a foreign scholarship, he was awarded a Ph.D. by Victoria University, Manchester (U.K.) in 1979.
Dr. Justice Chauhan enrolled as an Advocate in April 1974. He practiced in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court in civil, criminal, commercial taxes, and services matters. He worked as Counsel for the Government of Uttar Pradesh and NOIDA in the Supreme Court.
Dr. Justice Chauhan was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 5, 1995. He was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in July 1997 and again transferred to the Allahabad High Court in March 2003. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court in July 2008. Dr. Justice Chauhan was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 11, 2009, and retired on July 1, 2014.
