A luminary in the Indian judiciary, Justice Amitava Roy's career reflects a deep-rooted commitment to the principles of justice, marked by his extensive experience across various High Courts and ultimately the Supreme Court of India.
Born on March 1, 1953, in Kolkata, West Bengal, Justice Amitava Roy hails from a family deeply rooted in law. His father, the late Anadi Bhushan Roy, was a respected Senior Advocate in Dibrugarh, Assam. His father-in-law, the late Salil Kumar Dutta, served as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, and his brother-in-law, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipankar Dutta, is a sitting Judge of the Kolkata High Court.
Justice Roy completed his education in Dibrugarh. After earning a post-graduate degree in Physics from Dibrugarh University, he obtained his LL.B. degree from the same University in 1976.
Justice Amitava Roy enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh on February 20, 1976. He practiced extensively before the district courts in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia from 1976 to 1981. In 1981, he shifted his practice to the Gauhati High Court, where he appeared before the High Court, the Central Administrative Tribunal, and the District Subordinate Courts in Gauhati. His practice primarily focused on civil, criminal, constitutional, labor, and revenue law. He also served as the Senior Government Advocate of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh in the Gauhati High Court from 1991 to 1996. He was a member of the Assam Law Commission until his elevation and was designated as a Senior Advocate by the High Court on June 3, 1999.
Justice Roy was elevated as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 4, 2002. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, taking the oath of office on January 2, 2013. Subsequently, he was transferred and appointed as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on August 6, 2014. Justice Roy was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, taking his oath as a Judge on February 27, 2015.
