From 1987 to 1990, Justice Gavai practiced independently at the Bombay High Court, later focusing on Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Nagpur Bench. His representation of various municipal corporations and autonomous bodies underscored his versatility. He served as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor before being appointed Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench.
