Born on September 5, 1946, Harjit Singh Bedi pursued his academic interests, earning an M.A. and LL.B. before enrolling as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana on July 17, 1972. This marked the beginning of his distinguished legal career.
Justice Bedi's early career was diverse, encompassing roles in academia and government service. He was a part-time lecturer in Law from 1974 to 1983 and served as Editor of the Indian Law Reports, Punjab and Haryana Services for a decade. In 1983, he was appointed Deputy Advocate General (Punjab), a position he held until 1987. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1987 and later served as Additional Advocate General Punjab until 1989, followed by a year as Advocate General Punjab ending in 1990.
Justice Bedi's judicial career commenced with his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on March 15, 1991. He was confirmed as a permanent Judge on July 8, 1992. His expertise and dedication led to his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on October 3, 2006. He reached the pinnacle of his judicial career with his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 12, 2007. Justice H.S.
