He enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Madras on October 5, 1964, and practiced in the Kerala High Court, focusing on Civil Law on the Appellate side and Constitutional Law. He served as Standing Counsel for the Food Corporation of India and the State Bank of India.
Judicial Appointments
Justice Balasubramanyan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court on June 4, 1992, and became a permanent Judge on March 10, 1993. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on December 5, 2001. Transferred as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court effective March 10, 2003, he served until August 26, 2004.
