Biography
A notable figure in the Indian judiciary, Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant, born on August 30, 1952, in District Pithoragarh of Uttarakhand, has a distinguished career marked by contributions to legal scholarship and judicial service. He obtained his primary and secondary education in Pithoragarh. After completing B.Sc. and LL.B. degrees from Allahabad and Lucknow respectively, he joined the Bar at Allahabad in 1973. In 1976, Justice Pant entered the U.P. Judicial Service through the U.P. Munsif Examination, 1973. He held various posts in the Judicial Service at Ghaziabad, Pilibhit, Ranikhet, Bareilly, and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Promoted to U.P. Higher Judicial Service in 1990, he joined as Additional District Judge in District Bahraich. He also served as Joint Registrar in the High Court of Allahabad.

Justice Pant has authored books on various legal subjects, including “Marriage, Divorce and Other Matrimonial Disputes.” His commentary in Hindi on the ‘Code of Civil Procedure’ was awarded first prize by the Government of India in 2000. Following the creation of the State of Uttarakhand, he became the first Secretary, Judicial, of the State. He also held the post of District and Sessions Judge at Nainital before being posted as Registrar General of the High Court of Uttarakhand at Nainital. He took oath as Additional Judge, High Court of Uttarakhand on June 29, 2004, and was confirmed as a Judge of the said High Court on February 19, 2008. Justice Pant assumed the charge of Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Shillong on September 20, 2013, and served until August 12, 2014. Elevated further, he took oath as Judge, Supreme Court of India on August 13, 2014. Justice Pant retired on August 29, 2017.
