A distinguished figure in the Indian judiciary, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul has dedicated decades to the legal profession, marked by his profound understanding of law and commitment to justice.
Born on December 26, 1958, Justice Kaul received his early education at Modern School, New Delhi, graduating in 1976. He then pursued higher studies at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, earning an Economics (Hons.) degree in 1979. He completed his academic journey with an LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1982.
Justice Kaul enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi on July 15, 1982. His practice primarily revolved around the Delhi High Court, focusing on Commercial, Civil, Writ, Original, and Companies jurisdictions. He also appeared before the Supreme Court of India and various tribunals and commissions, including the MRTP Commission and the Company Law Board. His extensive litigation experience spanned Constitutional, Banking, Finance, Insurance, Customs and Excise, Real Estate, and Telecommunication laws.
He served as Advocate-on-Record for the Supreme Court of India from 1987 to 1999 and was designated as a Senior Advocate in December 1999. He held positions as Senior Counsel for the Delhi High Court, Delhi University, and the Union of India. He also served as Additional Senior Standing Counsel for the DDA.
Justice Kaul was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on May 3, 2001, and became a permanent Judge on May 2, 2003. He later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from September 23, 2012, to September 25, 2012. He was then elevated as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, effective June 1, 2013.
Beyond his judicial responsibilities, Justice Kaul has been actively involved in various organizations. He was the Treasurer of the Delhi High Court Bar Association from 1985 to 1988 and is a Senior Vice-President of INSOL India. He has participated in numerous national and international seminars, contributing papers and articles to various journals. He is also a member of prestigious institutions and clubs, reflecting his diverse interests in theatre, music, golf, and reading.
