Chief Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak is a distinguished jurist serving at the High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi. His career is marked by a commitment to justice and a deep understanding of various legal domains.
Born on 28th November, 1964, Chief Justice Sonak completed his school education from Don Bosco High School, Panaji, Goa. He then pursued a B.Sc. from Dhempe College of Arts & Science and an LL.B. from M. S. College of Law, Panaji, Goa, affiliated with Bombay University, graduating in First Class. He also holds a Portuguese Language Diploma from Xavier Centre of Historical Research.
Enrolling as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa in October 1988, he practiced at the Panaji Bench of the High Court of Judicature, Bombay. His practice encompassed civil & constitutional law, labour & service law, environmental law, commercial & tax laws, company law, and public interest litigations. He served as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, Special Counsel for the State Government, and Statutory Corporations.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay on 21st June 2013.
His Lordship was appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Jharkhand Vide Notification dated 02.01.2026 and took oath on 09.01.2026.
