A respected figure in the Indian legal system, Justice Sanjay Karol's journey began in Garli, Himachal Pradesh. His career is characterized by a strong academic foundation and extensive legal experience.
Born on August 23, 1961, Justice Karol's academic pursuits led him from St. Edwards School, Shimla, to a Bachelor's degree with Honors and a Law degree from Himachal Pradesh University. His early career involved practice across various legal forums in Delhi and other High Courts. In 1998, he was appointed Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh, a position he held until 2003, and was designated as Senior Advocate in 1999.
Justice Karol's judicial career commenced with his elevation to the High Court on March 8, 2007, where he served for over eleven years, including a period as Acting Chief Justice. He also contributed as patron-in-chief of the Himachal Pradesh Legal Services Authority and Chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh National Law University. Further, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court on November 14, 2018, and later transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Patna on November 10, 2019, where he served for over three years. Justice Karol also served as the patron-in-chief of Bihar Legal Services Authority and the Chancellor of the Chanakya National Law University.
Justice Sanjay Karol was elevated as a Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on February 6, 2023.
