A recent addition to the Bombay High Court, Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan brings extensive expertise in financial sector regulation and corporate law. His career is marked by contributions to legislative committees and a commitment to legal education.
Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan was sworn in as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 28, 2023 and as a permanent judge on September 18, 2025. Prior to this appointment, he had a nearly 25-year career in litigation and advisory roles, focusing on financial sector regulation, competition law, administrative law, company law, and exchange controls. He has appeared before various High Courts, the Hon'ble Supreme Court, Appellate Tribunals, and sectoral regulators.
Before establishing his own chambers in 2016, Somasekhar was a partner in two law firms, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions, securities regulations, investment agreements, and shareholders agreements.
Justice Sundaresan has been a member of legislative committees set up by the Union Government, Securities and Exchange Board of India, and the Reserve Bank of India. In these roles, he has drafted legislation and policy related to takeovers of listed companies, insider trading, issuance of global depository receipts, variable capital companies, regulation of valuers, corporate governance of banks, and cross-border insolvency. He was also actively involved in drafting the Indian Financial Code recommended by the Financial Sector Legislative Reform Commission. Additionally, he has served on the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India's Advisory Committee on corporate insolvency resolution process.
Justice Sundaresan has been a member of the Board of Studies at Nirma University, Institute of Law, and has taught securities regulations in a specialized post-graduate diploma course at Government Law College for over two decades.
