Justice V. Gopala Gowda
Biography
A key figure in the Supreme Court of India, Justice V. Gopala Gowda, born on October 6, 1951, has a career defined by decades of dedicated service to the legal profession and the judiciary. Born in Peddur, Chikkaballapor District in Karnataka State, Justice Gowda is the son of late Shri D. Venkate Gowda and Smt. Subbamma. He completed his B.Sc. from First Grade College, Chintamani in 1971-72 under Mysore University and LL.B. from SJRLC Bangalore in 1975. Enrolled as an Advocate on November 14, 1975, Justice Gowda began his legal career in the chambers of Sri K. Subba Rao and Sri S.C. Reddy, Senior Advocates, Bangalore. He started independent practice from 1979 in Bangalore, practicing in the High Court, Labour Courts, Industrial Tribunals, Civil Courts, and Criminal Courts. His practice encompassed Constitutional matters, Writ Petitions, and cases relating to labour, service, civil, co-operative society matters, land reforms, criminal, matrimonial, and all other civil matters. He appeared for several Trade Unions and All India Associations.

He served as Part-time Asstt. Professor in V.V. Puram Law College from 1983-1991, teaching Mohammedan Law and Labour Law, and as Part-time Asstt. Professor at University Law College, Bangalore in 1986-1987. He also worked as Standing Counsel for Bangalore Mahanagara Palike from 1983 to 1993 and again in 1995 until his elevation as Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court, and as Standing Counsel for Karnataka Public Service Commission, Bangalore. Justice Gowda was a Member of the Karnataka State Bar Council and Chairman of the Enrolment Committee until his elevation as Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court. Elevated as an Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court on June 11, 1997, and became a permanent Judge on June 3, 1999. He also served as Executive Chairman of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority and as a Member of the National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi. Sworn in as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, Cuttack on March 25, 2010. Elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on December 24, 2012. He retired on October 5, 2016.
