Born in Calcutta on February 9, 1965, to Mira and Justice (Retd.) Salil Kumar Datta, Justice Dipankar Datta has forged a distinguished career in the Indian judiciary. He graduated from Hazra Law College, University of Calcutta, in 1989, and subsequently enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal.
For approximately sixteen years, Justice Datta maintained a wide-ranging practice before the Calcutta High Court, other High Courts, tribunals, and the Supreme Court of India, representing diverse litigants including the State of West Bengal, the Union of India, and various statutory authorities. He also shared his expertise as a guest lecturer on Constitutional Law at the University College of Law, University of Calcutta.
His judicial journey continued with his elevation as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006. He then served as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from April 28, 2020, until his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on December 12, 2022. Justice Datta is scheduled to retire on February 8, 2030.
