Biography

Born in Kolkata on October 3, 1966, Justice Joymalya Bagchi pursued his LL.B. from Calcutta University and enrolled as an advocate in 1991. His legal practice at the Calcutta High Court, other High Courts, and the Supreme Court of India focused on criminal and constitutional law. He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court in 2011. Justice Bagchi was then transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, and later repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021. He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on March 17, 2025 and is scheduled to retire on October 2, 2031.
