Justice P.B. Sawant
Mr. Justice P.B. Sawant, born on June 30, 1930, was a distinguished jurist with a notable career in the Indian legal system. He earned a B.A. (Special) Hons. in Economics and an LL.B. from Bombay University.
Justice Sawant practiced as an Advocate in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India from 1957 onwards. His legal expertise spanned various branches of law, including civil, criminal, industrial, service, election, constitutional, and cooperative law, with experience in both original and appellate jurisdictions. He was appointed Judge of the Bombay High Court in 1973.
As a Judge, he conducted an inquiry into an Air-India aircraft crash in June 1982. He also served as a Lecturer in New Law College, Bombay, from 1965 to 1966, teaching Private International Law and Constitutional Law. Before his appointment as a judge, he was an office bearer and legal advisor to several Trade Unions and social and educational institutions.

Justice Sawant was elevated to the Bench of the Supreme Court of India on October 6, 1989, and retired on June 29, 1995. Throughout his career, he contributed articles to journals on various subjects and served as Governor’s nominee for the Selection of Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University in 1986, on the Staff Selection Committee of the Bombay University from 1986-87, and on the Senate of the Pune University in 1987. He also delivered Advocate Gandhi Memorial Lectures of Pune University in 1986.
