Biography
A distinguished jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice A.K. Patnaik, born on June 3, 1949, has had a remarkable career marked by intellectual rigor and dedication to the cause of justice. He is the son of late Shri Gopal Chandra Patnaik, a businessman of repute in Orissa. Justice Patnaik's early education was at Rajkumar College, Raipur, where he was awarded the prize for the “Best All Round Conduct and Leadership” in School. He pursued higher education at Delhi University, earning Honours in Political Science, and later obtained a Law Degree from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack. He was selected by the Rotary Foundation for a Group Study Exchange Programme in 1976 and visited New Jersey, U.S.A., to study American institutions and its people.

Justice Patnaik was enrolled with the State Bar Council of Orissa on March 28, 1974. He practiced in the High Court, Subordinate Courts, and Tribunals in Orissa, and frequently appeared before the Supreme Court of India. His practice encompassed various branches of law, with a specialization in Commercial Law and Constitutional Law. He served as Standing Counsel for the Orissa State Road Transport Corporation and as Senior Standing Counsel for the Commercial Taxes Organization, Government of Orissa. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Orissa on January 13, 1994, and on transfer, assumed charge as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 7, 1994. He became a permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 1995. After eight years of service in the Gauhati High Court, he assumed charge as a Judge of Orissa High Court on April 15, 2002. He served as the senior most Puisne Judge of the Orissa High Court and was the Executive Chairman of the Orissa State Legal Services Authority and the Chairman of Orissa Judicial Academy. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh on March 14, 2005. On transfer, he assumed charge as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on October 2, 2005. Appointed as Judge, Supreme Court of India, on November 17, 2009. He retired on June 2, 2014.
