Justice Doraiswamy Raju

A key figure in the Indian judiciary, Justice Doraiswamy Raju (born July 2, 1939) contributed significantly to the legal landscape through his tenures in various high courts and the Supreme Court of India. He retired on July 1, 2004, leaving behind a distinguished career marked by legal expertise and public service.

Early Life and Education

Justice Raju obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959 and his B.L. degree in Law from Madras University in 1961. He enrolled as an advocate on July 27, 1962.

Professional Career

From the beginning, he worked in the chambers of then Government Pleaders and assisted Advocate Generals of the State in the High Court. From 1975 to 1987, he worked independently as an Advocate, handling cases on the Original and Appellate Sides in Regular, Civil, Writ, Transport, Taxation, and Land Tenure matters. He was Standing Counsel for various Public Institutions and Undertakings. He was designated as Senior Advocate by the High Court, Madras, on April 21, 1987.

Judicial Appointments and Assignments

Justice Raju was elevated and sworn in as Judge of the High Court, Madras, on June 14, 1990. He held various chairmanships and executive positions, including Chairman of the Advisory Board under COFEPOSA and the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act. He was appointed as the Executive Chairman, Legal Services Authority for the Union Territory of Pondicherry. On July 1, 1998, he was appointed and sworn in as Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh High Court, Shimla. He was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 28, 2000.

Retirement

Justice Raju retired from the Supreme Court on July 1, 2004. Following his retirement, he resided in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
