A prominent figure in the Delhi High Court since February 14, 2025, Justice Tejas Karia brings a wealth of expertise from his extensive background in arbitration and information technology law. His appointment marks a significant inclusion of expertise from a law firm background into the judiciary.
Born on February 1, 1978, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Justice Karia comes from a family of Judges and Lawyers. He holds an LLB from ILS Law College, University of Pune (2000), an LLM from the University of Gujarat in Corporate Laws (2002), and an LLM from the London School of Economics in International Arbitration and Information Technology Laws (2003).
Justice Karia began practicing at Ahmedabad City Civil Court in 2000 and gained experience in trial court proceedings. He practiced in the High Court of Gujarat from 2001, handling various petitions and appeals. He also conducted a Court Martial as special defense counsel appointed by the Indian Army. In 2004, he shifted his practice to the High Court of Delhi and joined Amarchand Mangaldas & Co., appearing before various High Courts, tribunals, and the Supreme Court of India.
He specialized in International and Domestic Commercial Arbitrations, handling complex, high-value arbitrations across diverse industry sectors with seats in India, London, and Singapore. He headed the Arbitration practice as Partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co.
Justice Karia also handled matters relating to Information Technology Law, Privacy and Data Protection, Intermediary Liability, E-Commerce, Cybersecurity, E-Payments, and Online safety and content regulations.
Justice Karia has held numerous honorary positions, including Member of the Court of Arbitration of SIAC, ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, and Governing Council of the Indian Law Society (Pune). He contributed to drafting legislations as an advisor to the Law Commission of India and as a member of various high-powered committees for arbitration reforms.
He has been recognized in ‘Band 1' for arbitration by Chambers & Partners and as a ‘Thought Leader’ and ‘Global Leader’ by Who's Who Legal: Arbitration. He is dual-qualified as an Advocate in India and a Solicitor in England & Wales and is a Fellow of CIArb, London, and a Specialist Mediator with SIMC, Singapore.
