A luminary in the Indian legal field, Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, born in November 1915, had a multifaceted career spanning law, politics, and social activism. His journey began as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Madras in 1952, followed by a tenure as the Minister for Law, Home, Irrigation & Power in Kerala State from 1957 to 1959.
Before his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on July 17, 1973, Justice Iyer served as a Judge of the Kerala High Court from 1968 to 1971. He was also a member of the Law Commission from 1971 to 1973, contributing significantly to legal reforms. Justice Iyer was deeply involved in various organizations, including the Indian Society of International Law and the Indian Association of Lawyers. He also founded the Kerala Law Academy and presided over the International Centre for Kathakali, Delhi.
Throughout his career, Justice Iyer maintained affiliations with numerous cultural organizations, including the Indo-Soviet Cultural Society and the International Democratic Lawyers’ Association. He retired from the Supreme Court on November 14, 1980, leaving behind a legacy of judicial innovation and social justice.
