Justice Yogeshwar Dayal
A prominent figure in the Indian judiciary, Justice Yogeshwar Dayal, born in Lahore on November 18, 1930, had a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the legal field. He studied at Government College, Lahore, until 1946, and later at B.M. College, Simla, and the Law Faculty of the University of Delhi.
Starting his practice in Delhi in 1953, he handled various types of cases in the Punjab High Court and continued his practice in Delhi after the formation of the Delhi High Court in 1966. Justice Dayal, son of the late L. Bhagwat Dayal, Bar-at-Law, and a Senior practicing lawyer, also belonged to the family of L. Hardayal, M.A., a freedom fighter. As counsel, he represented the Delhi Administration and various corporate bodies.
Elevated as Judge of the Delhi High Court on February 28, 1974, he served as a One-Man Commission of Inquiry on three occasions under the Commissions of Inquiry Act. These inquiries included investigating a lathi charge on members of the High Court bar at the circuit Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Gwalior, the firing outside the Parliament House, and the death of the President of Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (S.G.P.C.), Delhi. His reports were accepted by the respective governments.

Appointed as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on August 21, 1987, he was later transferred as Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, taking charge on March 18, 1988. Justice Dayal was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on March 22, 1991, and served until his death on August 2, 1994. He was due to retire on November 17, 1995.
