Mr. Justice Deepak Roshan, a distinguished judge at the High Court of Jharkhand, carries a rich legacy of legal expertise from his family. His career is marked by significant contributions to taxation and commercial law.
Born on December 12, 1967, in Ranchi, Justice Roshan hails from a family deeply rooted in law. His maternal grandfather, Late Bahagwati Kr. Sinha, was the Principal of Patna Law College and Chotanagpur Law College, Ranchi, and a member of the Bihar State Law Commission. His father, Late Keshav Nandan Prasad, was a Senior Advocate of the High Court of Jharkhand and an expert in Corporate and Labour Laws.
After completing his schooling in Ranchi, Justice Roshan graduated from the University of Delhi and obtained his LL.B from Sir L. A. Shah Law College, Ahmadabad, Gujarat University. He joined the bar at the Ranchi Bench of Patna High Court on September 14, 1995, beginning his professional legal career.
Justice Roshan has had a distinguished career as an advocate, marked by his tenure as the Central Government Counsel from August 2004 to August 2009. He also served as the Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department in the Jharkhand High Court since February 2009, and as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax Department in the High Court of Jharkhand since November 2011 until his elevation.
Apart from his expertise in taxation and commercial laws, Justice Roshan has represented numerous institutions and organizations. He served as counsel for the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organization, Ministry of Coal, Government of India, from November 2005 to 2010, and for the Coal Mines Labour Welfare Organization, Ministry of Coal, Government of India, from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, he was empanelled as counsel for the Bihar Intermediate Education Council, NHAI, Jharkhand Academic Council, and various PSBs, including Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, and IDBI. He also served as retained counsel for the Bihar State Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation, Patna, from 2001 to 2007.
Justice Roshan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand on February 11, 2019, and took oath as a permanent Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand on September 15, 2020.
