A leading voice in contemporary Indian jurisprudence, Dr. Justice D Y Chandrachud's career reflects a deep commitment to justice, constitutional values, and academic rigor.
Dr. Justice D Y Chandrachud was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013. His tenure also includes his role as a Judge of the Bombay High Court from March 29, 2000, and as the Director of the Maharashtra Judicial Academy.
Before his judicial appointments, Dr. Justice Chandrachud served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998 and practiced law at both the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court.
His academic contributions include his role as a Visiting Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Mumbai and as a Visiting Professor at Oklahoma University School of Law, USA. He has delivered lectures at prestigious institutions such as the Australian National University, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Dr. Justice Chandrachud has been a speaker at conferences organized by bodies of the United Nations, including the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, International Labour Organisation, and United Nations Environmental Program, as well as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
He holds an LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA. He also earned a BA with Honours in Economics from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, and an LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, demonstrating his comprehensive academic background.
